<title>Sexual Nature Sexual Culture</title>
<city>Chicago</city>
<publisher>University of Chicago Press</publisher>
<year>1995</year>
<length>434 pp.</length>
<isbn>0226001822</isbn>
<description>In this multidisciplinary study of human sexuality, an international team of scholars looks at the influences of nature and nurture, biology and culture, and sex and gender in the sexual experiences of humans and other primates. Using as its center the idea that sexual pleasure is the primary motivational force behind human sexuality and that reproduction is simply a byproduct of the pleasurability of sex, this book examines sexuality at the individual, societal, and cultural levels.</description>

<title>Homosexuality and American Psychiatry: The Politics of Diagnosis</title>
<city>Princeton</city>
<publisher>Princeton University Press</publisher>
<year>1987</year>
<length>249 pp.</length>
<isbn>0691028370</isbn>
<description>In 1973, after several years of bitter dispute, the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association decided to remove homosexuality from its official list of mental diseases. Infuriated by the Board's action, a substantial number of dissident psychiatrists charged the association's leadership with capitulating to the pressure of Gay Liberation groups, and forced the board to submit its decision to a referendum of the full APA membership. Ronald Bayer presents a political analysis of the psychiatric battle involved, from the first confrontations organized by gay demonstrators at psychiatric conventions to the referendum initiated by orthodox psychiatrists. The result is a fascinating view of the individuals who led the debate and the fundamental questions that engaged them: social and cultural values, the definition of disease, and the nature of sexuality. Includes a new forward by the author.</description>

<length>242 pp.</length>

<description>Nationally recognized activist Wayne Besen spent four years examining the phenomenon of "ex-gay" ministries and reparative therapies - interviewing leaders, attending conferences, and visiting ministries undercover as he accumulated hundreds of hours of research. The result is this groundbreaking exposé of the controversial movement that's revered by independent religious groups and reviled by gay and lesbian organizations. The book examines "ex-gay" groups such as Love in Action, Exodus International, Homosexuals Anonymous, and profiles a cast of characters that includes Pat Robertson, Rev. Jerry Falwell, "ex-gay" poster boy John Paulk, National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality activist Richard Cohen, and psychiatrist Dr. Robert Spitzer.</description>

<title>Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price</title>
<city>Boston</city>
<publisher>Beacon Press</publisher>
<year>1992</year>
<length>308 pp.</length>
<isbn>0807079197</isbn>
<description>The hatred of lesbians, gay males, and bisexuals remains an "acceptable" prejudice in our society despite the widespread damage it causes in all our lives. Inviting sexual minorities and heterosexual men and women to become allies in the fight against homophobia, the contributors to this anthology explore how homophobia colludes with sexism by forcing people into rigid gender roles; how homophobia causes unnecessary pain and alienation in family relationships; how it works against health-care policy and arts administration that would benefit all members of society; and how homophobia leaves the promise of religious institutions unfulfilled. In both personal and analytical essays, the contributors show how the fight to end homophobia is everyone's fight if we are to bring about a less oppressive and more productive society. They offer concrete suggestions for transforming attitudes, behaviors, and institutions. Includes a section on how to run an anti-homophobia workshop.</description>

<description>This work combines autobiographical sources, personal interviews, and questions for reflection to explore issues relevant to everyone's sexual orientation and gender status, be they heterosexual, or gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or intersexual. Boesser examines the consequences a sexual minority person suffers when attempting to pass as heterosexual and/or as of a traditional gender expression. Boesser also looks at how society as a whole is affected when an individual is pressured to hide his/her sexual identity. <u>Silent Lives</u> is helpful for personal journaling and sharing with relatives and friends, and is also very useful as a college text, therapy supplement, or a catalyst for group discussions. Ten percent of the net proceeds from <u>Silent Lives</u> are donated by the author to <a href="http://pflag.org" target="_blank">Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays</a> (<a href="http://pflag.org" target="_blank">PFLAG</a>). <a href="http://www.silentlives.com/" target="_blank">More about Silent Lives</a></description>

<title>Sexual Attitudes: Myths and Realities</title>
<city>New York</city>
<publisher>Prometheus Books</publisher>
<year>1995</year>
<length>281 pp.</length>
<isbn>0879759496</isbn>
<description>This delightful work by two internationally acclaimed sexologists takes the reader on a guided tour through the many assumptions we humans harbor about our own sexuality. When did masturbation stop being a cause of insanity and become a normal part of sexual development? When did we stop viewing homosexuality as a sin or a sickness and accept it as a form of sexual expression? The Bulloughs highlight the ways in which social, moral, and religious attitudes have dramatically changed from being based upon pervasive myths to relying on more science-based realities. They even show how, in the past, science unwittingly helped perpetuate some myths.</description>

<description><u>I Am This One Walking Beside Me</u> is a moving collection of prayers written by Daniel Gebhardt, who has been living with HIV/AIDS for the past 20 years. What makes this book unique is that he writes from both a Christian and a gay perspective. Gebhardt provides readers with insight into such topics as everyday living, medical issues, relationships, self-exploration, and death. He also includes prayers that relate to compassion and a global understanding of the disease - a disease that continues to spread after it was discovered over 20 years ago.</description>

<title>Third Sex, Third Gender: Beyond Sexual Dimorphism in Culture and History</title>
<city>New York</city>

<year>1994</year>
<length>618 pp.</length>

<description>In the 1990s, questions of sex roles and individual identity have taken a central position in intellectual debates. These eleven essays in history and anthropology offer a novel perspective on these debates by questioning the place of sexual dimorphism in culture and history. They propose a new role for the study of alternative sex and gender systems in cultural science, as a means of critiquing thinking that privileges standard male/female gender distinctions and rejects the natural basis of other forms of sexuality.</description>

<description>Alan Bell and Martin Weinberg find that men in close-coupled relationships are less likely to regret being homosexual than others and much more rarely experience difficulties related to their sexual orientation. My clinical experience and observation confirm these findings. The capacity to fall in love and to maintain a relationship over time requires a high degree of self-esteem or "healthy narcissism." For gay and heterosexual men alike, it entails overcoming the injuries to self-esteem that accrue from paternal rejection and from peer and social stigmatization. Only a man with a healthy self-esteem can feel capable of being loved and of loving. Those who experience too much rage as a result of any of these injuries are most likely to consider themselves incapable of love and to believe that their homosexuality is responsible for their inhibition. The disadvantages that accrue to gay men in our society who are involved in a lasting relationship are outweighed by the emotional healing offered by a loving relationship. </description>

<city>New York</city>
<publisher>Public Affairs/Perseus Books Group</publisher>
<year>2003</year>
<length>288 pp.</length>
<isbn>1891620991</isbn>
<description>Despite the many social changes of the last half-century, many Americans still "pass:" black for white, gay for straight, and now in many new ways as well. We tend to think of passing in negative terms - as deceitful, cowardly, a betrayal of one's self. But this compassionate book reveals that many passers today are people of good heart and purpose whose decision to pass is an attempt to bypass injustice, and to be more truly themselves. Passing tells the poignant, complicated life stories of six present day "passers" whose stories, interwoven with others from history, literature, and life, explore the social realities which make passing an option in our culture and its logistical, emotional and moral consequences. They also raise fascinating questions about both the nature of identity and the structure of society.</description>

<description>Written with clarity, directness, and humor, The Sexual Brain examines the biological roots of human sexual behavior. It puts forward the compelling case that the diversity of human sexual feelings and behavior can best be understood in terms of the development, structure, and function of the brain circuits that produce them. A new afterword to this paperback edition takes up the work of Dean Hamer and his colleagues who in 1993 produced molecular genetic evidence for the existence of a gene that influences sexual orientation in men.</description>

<isbn>0813532299</isbn>
<description>Approximately one in every two thousand infants born in the United States each year is sexually ambiguous in such a way that doctors cannot immediately determine the child's sex. Some children's chromosomal sexuality contradicts their sexual characteristics. Others have the physical traits of both sexes, or of neither. Drawing upon life history interviews with adults who were treated for intersexuality as children, Preves explores how such individuals experience and cope with being labeled sexual deviants in a society that demands sexual conformity. By demonstrating how intersexed people manage and create their own identities, often in conflict with their medical diagnosis, Preves argues that medical intervention into intersexuality often creates, rather than mitigates, the stigma these people suffer.</description>

<title>Life Outside: The Signorile Report on Gay Men: Sex, Drugs, Muscles, and the Passages of Life</title>
<city>New York</city>
<publisher>HarperPerennial</publisher>
<year>1997</year>
<length>325 pp.</length>
<isbn>0060929049</isbn>
<description>Michelangelo Signorile galvanized a generation of lesbians and gay men when he took on the "closets of power" in his 1992 classic Queer in America. Now, in Life Outside, he offers an exposé of what he calls the "cult of masculinity" within contemporary gay male culture, while finding hope and renewal in other aspects of gay life. He reveals the origins of the current obsession in much of the gay community with an impossible physical ideal and explores the malevolent commercialization of gay sex. Life Outside also identifies another, more positive phenomenon in the gay male world. With the expansion of the gay movement, with more gays coming out - and remaining - in suburban, small-town, and rural America, the urban "scene" is no longer setting the standard for what it is to be gay in America. With the "deghettoization" and "deurbanization" of homosexuality, we find men who challenge long held assumptions about being gay, relationships, and coping with growing older. With first-person accounts from men who are moving into midlife with pride and vitality, Signorile points the way for all gay men to face the passages of life with a new maturity.</description>

<description>No subject has divided contemporary America more bitterly than homosexuality. Addressing the full range of the debate in this path-breaking book, Andrew Sullivan, the former editor of The New Republic, restores both reason and humanity to the discussion over how a predominantly heterosexual society should deal with its homosexual citizens. Sympathetically yet relentlessly, Sullivan assesses the prevailing public positions on homosexuality - from prohibitionist to liberationist and from conservative to liberal. In their place, he calls for a politics of homosexuality that would guarantee the rights of gays and lesbians without imposing tolerance. At once deeply personal and impeccably reasoned, written with elegance and wit, Virtually Normal will challenge readers of every persuasion; no book is more likely to transform out sexual politics in the coming decades.</description>

<description>Are people born gay, or does upbringing or even conscious personal choice play a part? The acrimonious row between gay rights activists and God-fearing conservatives over this burning question has now raged for over a decade. But the science they employ in their arguments is not merely outmoded but often fallacious. Since the ground-breaking work of Simon LeVay and Dean Hamer in the early '90s, a tremendous amount of new research has been carried out by scientists who now understand a great deal more about the biology of sexual attraction. How much does the non-scientific community really know about this research or understand the far-reaching implications of it? Wilson and Rahman show that attempts to find a sociological cause for homosexuality have little foundation and argue that popular efforts to blame parents or teachers for a child's homosexuality are futile and unjust. Combining their own findings with all the available quantifiable research, the authors have, with this study, provided an urgently needed addition to - and overview of - the major work that has been done in this field.</description>

<description>Because of the fear and loneliness around the subject of sexual orientation, our church has produced a helpful and healing resource we call &#8220;The Bluebook.&#8221; There are no mystical meanings here, just a reference to the hard copy version, which has a plain blue cover. The book is gently and carefully written in a "Question and Answer" format. Its purpose is to help families and congregations heal broken relationships, and affirm the differences that make us human together. It's an extraordinary book about about ordinary people. It is intended for those who know very little about the subject, as well as those whose families and personal lives have been deeply affected by misunderstanding.</description>

<description><p><i>Coming Out, Coming Home</i> increases the potential for spiritual growth and development in our society. Many books have been written and many opinions aired about gay rights and pro-gay theology, but not many have focused upon providing people with an opportunity to enlarge their own belief systems to embrace gay spirituality while still being true advocates of Scripture. Currently many people have felt the need to split the personal from their professional lives in order to intensify their job performance and maintain proper boundaries. But in doing so, many have also split off their soul life from their work life, forcing spirituality to go underground which often results in tension and disharmony. Because spirituality is all about connection, we know that when people lack the opportunities and richness of deeper connections, soul healing is often inhibited. Here you will find a deeper connection with yourself and others as you experience formerly rigid boundaries between God and sexual minorities begin to relax.</p></description>
